Keep cool in a hot Sharm el Sheikh!

The sun is shining and we are feeling the heat in a very hot Sharm el Sheikh. The sun draws millions of tourists each year and makes a hot Sharm el Sheikh a fantastic place to settle.  But during the month of August when the temperatures sour how can we stay cool and healthy.  We asked our team of locals and expats their tried and tested methods. Staying cool in a hot Sharm el Sheikh Spend as much time in the water as possible! This is easy coming from a diving instructor.  But seriously being in the water certainly helps in cooling your core temperature down.  Just don’t forget your sun block! Drink – Drink – Drink! You will rarely see any of us without a bottle in hand – of water of course.  Water is your new best friend and will keep you hydrated and healthy.  Try to limit sodas, tea, coffee and alcohol. Eat cucumbers and watermelon Both are available everywhere in Sharm.  Not only are they delicious and refreshing they also help to keep you hydrated. Set you air-con correctly It’s great to be cool but don’t over do it.  Setting temperatures around 28 degrees rather than on it’s minimum helps you feel cooler when you go outside. Get in the shade Shade is great – avoid the full sun.  You will still get a healthy tan in the shaded areas so why suffer in the direct sun light. Sun Block Invest in a great sunblock with a high factor and apply well.  It’s amazing how many people forget the feet and ears! Sun Glasses These are a must! Cover your head You really feel and look so much cooler in a wide brimmed had ladies and for the guys a cap is a must.  Keeps sun off the neck and face and helps with sun stroke.  ...

Sharm Diving Summer 2015

We are often asked what the diving is like year round so we thought we would share the best of what we expect for Sharm Diving Summer 2015. Diving in the Red Sea and particularly Sharm el Sheikh can be a simply breath taking and unique experience.  With water temperatures being 26+ degrees kitting up is easy – some divers choose to dive in shorts or just a 3 mm shorty.  The warm waters also brings some incredible marine life. Our all round top Sharm Diving Summer 2015 has to be  Anemone City – Shark Reef – Yolanda Reef.  This is a simply WOW drift dive. Jumping in close to the reef for a nice easy descent you are then met by Nemos galore.  The field of Anemones is just so beautiful and too many to count.  On leaving Anemone City you swim through the deep blue waters across to Shark Reef. Currents being right at the corner of Shark Reef you are suddenly struck by the sheer amount of fish in the water.  A wall of hundreds of snapper – large schools of barracuda – trevally – tuna – oceanics – unicorn fish – even our little fat friends the mask puffer fish are out in droves.  Currents permitting we love to spend a good part of the dive hanging in the water just watching the underwater world pass us by.  Between the marine life, wall and deep blue waters this part of the dive is breath taking. From Shark Reef you pass the saddle between Shark and Yolanda Reefs and on to the coral plateau leading to a vertical drop off.  Here the hard and soft corals are the perfect back ground for any photographer to capture free swimming morays, turtles, large schools of unicorn fish and of course unexpected visitors! Onto the cargo and wreckage of the Yolanda – toilets, baths, automobile….. In the summer we tend not to notice so much the wreckage and cargo as there is just so much fish action. Finishing at the Satellite Reef for the safety stop whilst taking in the brightly coloured fish, corals and recapping the dive in your mind.  On these dives we never want to our safety stops to...

Sharm Holiday Check List – Summer 2015

We have put together a Sharm Holiday Check List as we know planning your summer holiday can be a little stressful.  For those who are opting for a self organised rather than a package holiday this will be an even more valuable tool. Sharm Holiday Check List Flights Book on line and remember to triple check passenger details are correct.  If you are diving check out upgrading your luggage to include sports gear – this is the cheapest option offered by many airlines when compared to buying one extra bag. Accommodation There are a huge number of types and levels of accommodation.  When choosing think about where you will best fit.  There are many self catering options available for those on a budget or would like to dine at some of the many restaurants here and want the comforts of home.  All Inclusive options are available at most hotels with some offering Half Board and Bed and Breakfast. Transfers If you are not with a package it is possible to get a taxi directly from the Airport however it is easier and often cheaper to arrange this in advance.  Many diving centers will assist with this. Insurance Not the first thing on our minds when looking forward to a holiday but travel insurance is essential.  Check the small print to make sure everything is covered including scuba diving and also the exclusions and limits.  Scuba Diving cover can easily be bought online from DAN. Packing The summer months are hot and no warm clothes are needed apart from when you are in air conditioning when a light cover up is perfect.  On the whole the dress is quite relaxed in Sharm and unless you are in a very posh hotel there is no need to pack formal clothes for dinner.A high factor good quality water proof sun block is the most important item.  Although pharmacies are well stocked and many in Sharm it is a good idea to pack a basic first aid kit including some re-hydrant.Pack spare camera batteries as not all types are easily available here and don’t forget the adapters for your electrical items. Dive kit is easy – with warm water temperatures a nice shorty will be enough for most divers.  For a more detailed list check out our earlier blog. Excursions There are too many excursions and activities to list and all available in destination.  Always remember to book through a reputable source to make sure that the standards are up to par.  Excursions can be booked in advance on line and many dive centers are happy to arrange for them you.  Our non diving favorites would be star gazing in the desert complete with bedouin dinner and tea. We hope this list helps with your planning and of course we are always happy to help with dive and non dive related questions....
